# ❓ System: What happens during an FTAPI update in the cloud?

Updates to the FTAPI Cloud run without interruption: FTAPI stays available during the update, and your users stay signed in. This article explains to administrators what happens during an update and how to assess questions about interrupted uploads or downloads.

## Who is this article for?

This article applies to the **FTAPI Cloud** from version 4.69.0.

If you run FTAPI **on-premises**, you install updates yourself on your own schedule. The following sections do not apply to you.

## How an update works

The new version starts before the old one shuts down. Only once the new version is ready does it take over all requests. For you and your users, this means:

- FTAPI stays available throughout the update.
- Your users stay signed in, in the browser as well as in SecuRooms Drive, the Outlook Add-in, the Process Client and SecuFlows Advanced. Nobody has to sign in again after an update.
- You do not need to prepare anything before an update or follow up afterwards.

## How updates are announced

We continue to announce every update on the [FTAPI status page](https://status.ftapi.com/) as scheduled maintenance with a two-hour window. Your instance is updated within this window. Your users can keep working as usual during this time.

The window helps you with support questions: if a user's upload or download is interrupted, the status page shows you whether an update was running at that time. To learn how to subscribe to announcements, see [System: How do I get informed about maintenance work and availability?](https://support.ftapi.com/en/article/-system-wie-werde-ich-uber-wartungsarbeiten-und-die-verfugbarkeit-informiert)

## Uploads and downloads during an update

In rare cases, a file that is being transferred at the exact moment the old version hands over to the new one has to be transferred again. This is the only case in which your users may notice an update. What happens then depends on the application.

### Downloads

A download that is running during the update may be interrupted. Your users then see an error message and start the download again.

### Uploads

| Application | What happens to a running upload |
| --- | --- |
| SecuRooms in the browser | The upload resumes automatically. |
| SecuRooms Drive version 1.1.0 or later | The upload pauses while FTAPI cannot be reached and then resumes automatically. SecuRooms Drive shows paused uploads in the app. |
| SecuMails in the browser | The upload may be interrupted. Your users see an error message and upload the file again. |
| Outlook Add-in for classic Outlook | The upload may be interrupted. Your users see an error message and upload the file again. |
| Outlook Add-in for new Outlook | The upload may be interrupted. Your users see an error message and upload the file again. |
| Process Client | The upload may be interrupted. Your users see an error message and start the process again. |
| SecuFlows Advanced | The upload may be interrupted. Your users see an error message and start the process again. |

## Assessing questions from your users

If a user reports an interrupted upload or download, proceed as follows:

1. Ask when the transfer was interrupted.
2. On the [FTAPI status page](https://status.ftapi.com/), check the past maintenance entries to see whether an update was running at that time.
3. If the interruption falls within an update window, your users start the transfer again. Uploads in SecuRooms in the browser and in SecuRooms Drive continue on their own.
4. If the interruption falls outside a window or happens repeatedly, contact FTAPI Support.
